What is HAL?
HAL [Hybrid Assistive Limb] is the world’s first* technology to improve, assist, enhance, and regenerate the wearer’s physical functions based on their intentions. Because of this feature, it is also known as “Wearable Cyborg”.
When a person tries to move, the brain sends a signal to the muscle to initiate the movement. At that time, a very faint signal reflecting the wearer’s intention to move appears on the skin’s surface. HAL can detect these so-called ‘bio-electrical signals’ (BES) through sensors affixed to the skin’s surface. Even though the BES from a paralyzed person is too weak to trigger movement on its own, HAL can detect these very faint signals and aid in completing the movement according to the wearer’s intention, thereby making locomotion and movement possible.
HAL’s MOTION PRINCIPLE

Think and send
When a person wants to move, their brain sends a signal along a pathway to the intended muscle(s)

Restriction/ impairment
For some people, however, this pathway has been weakened, damaged or broken from disease, injury or dysfunction.

Read
In these patients, the HAL can pick up these weakened nerve signals at the surface of the skin.

Move
Once this “intention to move” is detected, motors inside the HAL are activated, helping the wearer to complete the action.

Feedback
This creates a positive feedback loop which can strengthen, reinforce and even rebuild neural pathways.
